Bubble Braids Glow

Why bubble braids are my go-to “lowkey but cute” hair

Bubble braids are one of those hairstyles that look like you tried… without actually trying that hard. It’s giving Pinterest energy, it’s giving “I need help with my hair” but also “wait I kinda nailed it” 🫧✨ I keep coming back to them because they work for messy days, clean-girl days, gym-to-brunch days, and even those moments when I want something a little more iconic without committing to a full braid skill set.

What I love most: bubble braids are basically a styling trick. You’re not weaving strands like a traditional braid—you’re creating sections with elastics, then gently pulling each section to “puff” it into a bubble. So if you can make a ponytail, you can do this. And if you can do a French braid, you’ll understand the “add hair as you go” vibe even faster.

What you need (keep it simple)

I’m not a “50 tools on the counter” person. Here’s the minimal setup that makes bubble braids actually look smooth and wearable:

1) Small elastics (clear or hair-colored). You’ll use more than you think, especially for long hair.

2) A brush + a comb for parting. A rat-tail comb is perfect if you want clean sections and fewer bumps.

3) Styling product (optional but helpful). A little smoothing product or light gel helps with flyaways and makes the bubbles look polished. If you hate crunchy hair, use a tiny amount and focus on the top and part line.

4) Clips for holding sections while you work. Not required, but it makes everything faster.

5) Texture helper (optional): dry shampoo or texture spray if your hair is super silky and elastics slide.

The easiest bubble braid tutorial (the one I always do)

This is the “easy bubble braids” version—the one that feels effortless and still looks put together.

Step 1: Decide your first section

Before you even touch an elastic, decide how much hair you want in your first section. This matters because it sets the whole vibe: small sections look sporty and tight, bigger sections look softer and more romantic.

Then secure that first section into a ponytail with an elastic. If you’re doing two bubble braids (pigtails), do the same on both sides and try to match the height.

Step 2: Create “Section 2” and secure

Now you’re going to add hair into the ponytail (kind of like the logic of a French braid, but way easier). Use your thumbs to gather a new section beneath the first elastic, bring it into the ponytail, and secure with a second elastic. Keep the hair smooth as you go—use your fingers or a comb to prevent bumps.

Step 3: Make the first bubble

Here’s the part that makes it look like bubble braids and not just “a ponytail with a bunch of elastics.” Gently pull the hair between elastic #1 and elastic #2 outward, little by little, on both sides. Don’t yank—think “fluff and shape.”

You can go tight bubbles for a sleek look or loose bubbles for a soft, airy look. I usually do medium-loose because it photographs cute but still holds up.

Step 4: Repeat down the length (Section 3, Section 4…)

Keep adding hair, securing with an elastic, then pulling out the section above it to form the next bubble. Repeat all the way down. The number of bubbles depends on your hair length and how dramatic you want it. The first time I did it, I made too many bubbles and it looked extra-extra… so now I do fewer, bigger bubbles for a cleaner finish.

Step 5: Finish the ends

When you get to the bottom, secure the final elastic, then gently puff the last bubble. If your ends are thin, don’t over-pull the last section—leave it a little tighter so it doesn’t look stringy.

How to make bubble braids work for long, thick hair

Bubble braids on long thick hair are honestly a dream because the bubbles look full without much effort. But thick hair also means more weight, so the style can slide down or get bulky in weird places.

My fixes:

• Use more elastics than you think. Shorter distance between elastics helps the bubbles sit nicely and not collapse.

• Build structure at the top. If the top is too loose, the whole braid looks messy fast. Keep the first two sections smoother, then fluff more as you go down.

• Pull evenly. If you only tug one side, the bubble twists and starts to look like a lopsided balloon.

• Consider two bubble braids instead of one. Thick hair in one bubble braid can look huge (cute for festivals, but heavy for everyday). Two braids balance the weight and feel more wearable.

Dutch bubble braids (my favorite “iconic hair” upgrade)

Okay so this is the style I do when I want bubble braids but with more detail—like a mix between a Dutch braid and bubble braid. I call them Dutch bubble braids because it feels like you’re building a braid shape at the scalp, then turning it into bubbles down the length.

How it’s different: instead of starting with a simple ponytail section, you start with a Dutch braid motion for the first few passes (adding hair from the sides), but you secure sections with elastics and puff them into bubbles as you go. It gives that lifted, snatched look on top, and then the fun bubble texture below.

Tip: If you’re new, do a regular bubble braid first. Once your hands understand the “section + elastic + pull” rhythm, the Dutch bubble version feels way less confusing.

Criss cross bubble braids (cute but still doable)

If you’ve seen criss cross bubble braids and thought “that’s adorable but I will never,” I promise it’s not as scary as it looks 🤩 The trick is to think in small top sections.

Quick concept:

• Make two small ponytails at the top (left and right).

• Cross them over each other and secure into the opposite side with a new elastic (this creates the criss cross).

• Then continue downward, adding hair and forming bubbles like normal.

This style is so good when you want something different for summer, concerts, or just when your regular ponytail feels boring.

Cute bubble braid ideas (pick your vibe)

When I’m in a “20 days of hairstyles” mood, bubble braids are the easiest way to switch it up without learning a whole new technique. Here are my most-worn variations:

1) Low bubble pigtails (my lowkey favorite)

Part the hair down the middle and do two low ponytails near the nape. Add elastics down each side and puff the bubbles. It looks soft, casual, and honestly very “my go-to lowkey” energy.

2) High bubble pigtails (sporty + cute)

Same concept, but higher placement makes it playful and more “statement.” Great when you want your face lifted and your hair off your neck.

3) Half-up bubble braid

Take the top half of your hair, secure it, then create bubbles down that section only. This is perfect if you want to keep hair down but still have something styled.

4) Single bubble braid ponytail

One ponytail, bubbles down the length. Clean, simple, and it works for almost any outfit. If you want it to look extra polished, keep the top sleek and make the bubbles more uniform.

5) Bubble braid with face-framing pieces

Leave two small pieces out in the front and keep the rest structured. It softens the look instantly. If flyaways happen, I smooth them lightly—nothing too heavy.

How to make your bubbles look “full” (without teasing)

Sometimes the bubbles come out looking flat, especially if your hair is fine or freshly washed. Here’s what helps without making it complicated:

• Pancake the bubble in tiny pulls: pull a little, then switch sides, then pull a little more. Slow is better than aggressive.

• Add a little texture first: if your hair is slippery, a bit of texture spray or dry shampoo gives grip so the bubble holds shape.

• Use smaller spacing: closer elastics = more “bubble” definition.

• Don’t over-smooth the lengths: sleek roots are cute, but if the mid-lengths are too silky, the bubbles collapse faster.

Common problems (and the fixes I actually use)

Problem: bumps on the scalp

Fix: smooth each section before adding the elastic. If you already tied it and see a bump, gently loosen that elastic, smooth with fingers or comb, then retie.

Problem: bubbles look uneven

Fix: match the spacing between elastics and pull each bubble the same amount. I literally do “two pulls left, two pulls right” so it stays balanced.

Problem: elastics show too much

Fix: use hair-colored elastics, or place them slightly under the bubble so the puff hides them. Also, bigger bubbles hide elastics better.

Problem: the style feels tight

Fix: don’t yank the ponytail sections too tight at the start. Bubble braids can look sleek without being painful. Comfort matters if you’re wearing it all day.

Problem: bubbles collapse after an hour

Fix: add a little texture before styling, use more elastics, and don’t over-pull the bubble to the point where it gets airy and weak. A “medium puff” holds longer than an extreme puff.

When I wear bubble braids (aka: they fit everything)

I wear bubble braids when I want an easy hairstyle that still looks intentional: errands, casual days, summer days, and anytime I’m taking photos and want my hair to have shape from every angle. It’s also one of my favorite “confidence hair” styles because it’s cute, it’s secure, and it doesn’t fall into my face every two seconds.

If you’ve been saving bubble braid inspo and never tried it, this is your sign. Start with the simplest version, then level up into Dutch bubble braids or criss cross once you’re comfortable 🫧✨
